Admission Process for MD Program

The BIMS (SOM-HP) aims to provide:

An integrated and flexible curriculum that promotes the skill and art of medicine, critical thinking, and lifelong learning needed to succeed as a practicing physician.

BIMS (SOM-HP)’S educational program utilises the most innovative and current methods for delivery of a medical education leading to the MD – Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree after Four (4) years of study:

Four Year MD Program Overview

The MD program further consists of a 160-week curriculum that is typically completed within four calendar years:

  • Total Years = 4
  • Total Weeks = 162
  • Total Credits = 236
  • Total Credit Hours = 708


The Four-Year MD program is classified into two phases:

1. BASIC SCIENCES (PRECLINICAL):

Year 1 and 2 of academic years comprises a total of:

  • Two years
  • 80 weeks
  • 156 Credits
  • 468 credit hours of study at BIMS (SOM-HP) campus in Montego Bay, Jamaica.


2. CLINICAL TRAINING

Year 3 and 4 of academic years comprises a total of:

  • Two years
  • 82 weeks
  • 80 Credits
  • 240 credit hours of rotating through clerkships in the Clinical Sciences at BIMS (SOM-HP) associated teaching and participating hospitals principally in the United States, Jamaica, wider Caribbean and Asia


Credits & Credit Hours

A total of 708 credit hours are required at BIMS (SOM-HP) to obtain the Doctor of medicine Degree, as follows:

  • Years 1 & 2: Introduction to basic science with correlated system teaching, incorporating basic and clinical sciences in the study of an organ system, for a total of 468 credit hours.
  • Years 3 & 4: Clinical training is directed towards the area of clinical medicine that are important in family practice, for a total of 240 credit hours.

A.  CANCELLATION OF ENROLLMENT:

* The students have the right to cancel his/her enrollment agreement by the end of the first day of semester.

* After classes have commenced, the student has the right to withdraw at any time as per the following withdrawal process.

B.  STUDENT WITHDRAWAL

          Official Withdrawal

  1. A student wishing to withdraw from further study at the institution for any reason at any time of the academic year, he/she will need to inform the Dean and the Admissions office with a written letter of intent and with immediate effect.
  1. The statement by the student must be dated and duly signed and further witnessed by a Justice of the peace in Jamaica or an Attorney at Law or a Notary public in Jamaica or their country of origin.
  1. The same document shall be sent by a courier or electronically to the above-mentioned offices and are required to receive written approval for a Leave of Absence (LOA) from the Office of the Dean of Students
  1. DISCONTINUED ATTENDANCE OR NOTIFICATION TO THE INSTRUCTOR OR ANY OTHER OFFICE WILL NOT CONSTITUTE AN OFFICIAL WITHDRAWAL.

    Unofficial Withdrawal

  1. If a student stop attending classes or clinical rotations and has not provided a Withdrawal Form, notified the Dean and Admissions office of a withdrawal, or requested a Leave of Absence, he/she will be unofficially withdrawn from the institution through the Administrative Withdrawal process.
  1. An interruption of enrollment status that does not qualify as a leave of absence is considered as a unofficial withdrawal as of the last date of attendance.
  1. DISCONTINUED ATTENDANCE OR NOTIFICATION TO THE INSTRUCTOR OR ANY OTHER OFFICE WILL CONSTITUTE AN UNOFFICIAL WITHDRAWAL.
