Choosing a Career in Medical Science – All You Need to Know

conference meeting

Millions dream of becoming a doctor, and for a good reason. The field of medical science is, perhaps, the most noble of them all. It is, however, not just about donning a white coat and stethoscope; it is so much more – vast, interesting, and challenging. Medical science is a cog in the larger picture of betterment of the quality of human life, and as a medical practitioner, you play a vital role in this.

What is medical science, exactly?

Medical science involves understanding the human body, causes of disease, treatments and effects of medicine. In a nutshell, it equips aspiring medical practitioners with the knowledge of how to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases.

To begin with, a thorough diagnosis sets the tone for the required treatment. And the correct diagnosis of a disease requires a thorough understanding of a healthy body. Once this is in place, medical practitioners can decide a course of action for the correct treatment. Then again, as the cliché goes, prevention is better than cure. So, medical doctors also spend a large portion of their careers to understand the nuts and bolts of disease prevent, and equip the society with this invaluable knowledge.

A degree in medical science can enable you to work in several fields or even lay the foundation for further study. Once qualified, you will have the option to supplement your expertise with a Master of Medicine (MMed) or Masters in Clinical Research degree. From here on in, the possibilities are virtually endless. Graduates can take on a diverse portfolio of roles including higher education, post-graduate study, the pharmaceutical industry, the biotechnology industry, scientific consultation, consultancy roles and education…the list goes on.

Who can choose pre-clinical and clinical science programs?

At BIMS, we aim to contribute to a healthier tomorrow through innovative education and ground-breaking research. And the first step towards our goal is the right curriculum.

Our 4-year MD program is comprehensive, competitive, and integrative. We have adopted a curriculum that fosters communication between departments, develops a well-rounded perspective of the human body and encourages critical thinking.

Students who have completed four years of accredited secondary school and Bachelor’s Degree or Post-Baccalaureate requirements can choose the pre-clinical and clinical science programs. Students who have completed three years of undergraduate work or one full academic year of English Composition, Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Biology, General and Organic Chemistry with laboratory work are also eligible to apply.

What to expect during these courses?

The educational program at BIMS is designed to be innovative and stimulating, with a curriculum that promotes skill, curiosity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. The 4-year MD program is split into two years each of pre-clinical and clinical sciences.

The first two years focus on foundational medical sciences. With courses such as genetics, musculoskeletal system, neuroscience, respiration, cardiovascular system, gastroenterology, haematology, immunology and the endocrine system, the course is delivered in an organ-system based manner.

During the first two years, you will gain great exposure to clinical experience. You will have access to medical imaging in anatomy as a simulated activity along with case studies and discussions. You will also be introduced to clinical medicine and learn the skill of interviewing patients and conducting physical examinations under supervision in a simulated patient lab. As the year progresses, students learn about health challenges faced in different types of populations, impact of climate change on medicine, disorders of the nervous system and a host of other disorders.

Clinical Sciences are covered during the third and fourth year of the MD program. These two years include concentrated clinical training, or rotations, electives, and sub-internships.

Year-three will include internal medicine, paediatrics, general surgery, psychiatry, obstetrics, and gynaecology. Year-four will include family medicine and additional electives, namely, Radiology, Dermatology, Preventive medicine, Infectious disease, Emergency medicine, Haematology, Oncology, Anaesthesia, Critical care, Pain management, ENT, Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology.

As Global Health equality is a vital aspect of our vision, we understand the importance of integrating the Global Health Track program with our curriculum. Students of our institute are introduced to the study of public health, epidemiology, and treating disease on a global scale. Themes such as health systems, economics, child and women health, social wellbeing, physical and mental wellbeing, climate change, and many others find their way into our vast curriculum. These themes are blended with the Clinical Medicine course during the pre-clinical and clinical science programs.
