About the BIMS Medical Science Program

The BIMS medical science program includes an innovative, integrated curriculum that is designed to promote skill and critical thinking. The curriculum uses a state-of-the-art technological platform combined with conventional textbooks for instruction, keeping in mind the fast-paced technological progress witnessed in the field of medicine. Not only will you gain a thorough understanding of the human body and disease, you will also be equipped to deal with technological advancements in the field of medicine.

The BIMS MD Program is a four-year degree program that leads to the MD- Doctor of Medicine degree on completion. With a 160- week curriculum completed within four years, this degree includes 480 credit hours and can be divided into two phases:

Basic Sciences (Pre-clinical) Curriculum

The Basic Sciences curriculum includes Year-1 and Year-2 of the MD program and spans through 78 weeks and 80 credits, with 240 credit hours of study at our BIMS SOM-HP campus in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

With the main focus on foundational sciences, the curriculum is designed based on organ-systems with emphasis on the normal structure and functions of Physiology, Human Behaviour, Biochemistry, and Normal Anatomy. You will learn medical imaging in a simulated laboratory and will be taught case-based discussions in small groups. Courses within curriculum will include:

  • Cell Biology and Molecular Biology/Genetics
  • Musculoskeletal System and Skin
  • Neuroscience
  • Gastroenterology
  • Respiration
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Basic Haematology and Immunology
  • Endocrinology and Reproduction

Basic Sciences: Year-1

Semester One will include the following topics to be covered in detail:

  • Cell Biology
  • Human Development (Embryology and Histology)
  • Molecular Medicine – Foundation
  • Musculoskeletal System
  • Introduction to Clinical Medicine: 1 and 2

The first semester will include interviewing patients and conducting physical examinations, first in a simulated patient lab. You will also learn about public health, primary healthcare, epidemiology and treatment of diseases on a global level.

Semester Two will include the following topics:

  • Haematology
  • Respiratory System
  • Neurosciences
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Introduction to Clinical Medicine: 3

Semester Three will include:

  • Introduction to Clinical Medicine: 4
  • Biostatistics and Epidemiology

You will then learn about the challenges regarding health and human rights with regards to displaced, refugee and migrant populations. You will also learn about burden of disease, needs of vulnerable populations and improvement strategies for health systems.

Basic Sciences: Year-2

Semester One will include the following topics:

  • Neurosciences 2
  • Gastrointestinal Tract
  • Renal System
  • Introduction to Clinical Medicine

You will learn about the physical and mental wellbeing of patients, and the impact of technology and climate change on medicine. You will also learn about disorders of the central nervous system, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and feeding and eating disorders. Furthermore, the course will include an introduction to the Medical Spanish Course.

Semester Two will include:

  • Endocrine/Reproductive System
  • Principles of Clinical Medicine

This section will stress upon aspects of microbiology, immunology, and pathology. It will cover personality disorders, substance abuse, psychopharmacology and effects of alcohol on the central nervous system. This semester will also include preparation for the USMLE Step-1 test.

Clinical Sciences Program

The Clinical Sciences Program comprises of Year-3 and Year-4 and is the Graduate Clinical Core Rotation period. During these two years, you will be completing your clinical rotations. Years three and four include 82 weeks, with 80 credits and 240 credit hours including clerkships in our associate hospitals.

Clinical Sciences: Year-3

This year will involve core rotations and will cover the following topics:

  • Internal Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Paediatrics
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Psychiatry

Clinical Sciences: Year-4

With 114 credit hours, Year-4 will include Family Medicine and Additional Electives. Electives can be Radiology, Dermatology, Infectious disease, Preventive medicine, Emergency medicine, Haematology and Oncology, Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Pain management, Orthopaedics, ENT and Ophthalmology.

Global Health Track

At BIMS, we understand the importance of introducing our students to the concept of Global Health early. And to address this need, we have integrated the Global Health Track program into our curriculum as a four-year longitudinal track. This program is designed to provide you with the knowledge needed to work on global health and address the issues pertaining to it. The program is integrated with the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Course and will include themes such as:

  • Burden of Disease
  • Governance
  • Physical, Mental and Social wellbeing
  • Security
  • Technology
  • Climate Change
  • Medical Spanish.
